Lost Dutchman State Park

Arizona State Park · Apache Junction, Arizona

A state park at the foot of the Superstition Mountains east of Phoenix, named after the legend of the Lost Dutchman's Gold Mine, which the prospector Jacob Waltz supposedly found somewhere in these mountains before he died in 1891. Saguaro-dotted desert climbs straight to sheer volcanic cliffs, and trails from the park lead into the Superstition Wilderness of Tonto National Forest. The best-known hike, Siphon Draw, climbs to the Flatiron, a flat-topped shoulder of rock with views across the Valley; its last mile is a very steep scramble, and heat rescues are common. Gentler loops wind through the desert below. Spring wildflowers can carpet the slopes after wet winters. In 2026 day use cost $10 per vehicle with one person or $20 with two to four.
