Lost Maples State Natural Area
Subnational Park · Vanderpool, Texas
About 2,900 acres of limestone canyon along the Sabinal River protecting an isolated stand of Uvalde bigtooth maples — an ice-age relict population left behind when the climate warmed, growing where no maple has any business growing. For a few weeks each autumn the canyons turn crimson and gold against grey limestone, which is the only reliable fall colour in Texas and the reason the park caps its gates and turns cars away.
