Lost River Gorge and Boulder Caves
A Glacial Gorge In Kinsman Notch Where The Lost River Runs Beneath Fallen Granite Boulders, Walked On Boardwalks, Ladders And Stairs, With Optional Squeeze Through Boulder Caves. · North Woodstock, New Hampshire
A narrow glacial gorge high in Kinsman Notch, about 6 to 7 miles west of North Woodstock on Route 112, where the Lost River drops through a jumble of huge granite boulders and for long stretches disappears beneath them, which is how it got its name. Visitors follow a self-guided loop of wooden boardwalks, stairs and ladders down through the gorge, about a mile in all with many hundreds of steps, past pools, potholes and small waterfalls, ending near Paradise Falls. Along the way, side passages lead into the boulder caves: dark, damp gaps between fallen rocks where you crawl, duck or squeeze on hands and knees, with names like the Lemon Squeeze (names may change). Every tight cave is optional and has a walk-around, so families can do as much or as little as they like. The gorge stays cool even in August, the wood is often wet and slick, and it is not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs. The attraction is seasonal, roughly May to October, and has used timed or online tickets on busy days. Allow about 1 to 2 hours.

Seasonal. The gorge has generally opened from about early or mid-May to mid or late October, closing for the winter when snow and ice make the boardwalks unsafe; confirm opening and closing dates each year. In season it is open daily, typically from morning to late afternoon, with the last admission an hour or more before closing so visitors can finish the loop; summer hours may run later. Timed or online tickets have been used on busy summer and foliage days. The loop may close temporarily in heavy rain, high water or thunderstorms. Route 112 through Kinsman Notch is open all year.
