Forty-odd wineries in the horse country west of Washington, close enough that the county markets itself as DC's Wine Country and honest enough that most of its traffic is exactly that. The vines run up against the Blue Ridge on gravel lanes through Middleburg, Hillsboro, Purcellville and Waterford, and the same roads carry a serious cider and brewery trail alongside them.

Tasting rooms generally 11 AM - 5 PM or 6 PM; most open Friday to Sunday all year and several close midweek in winter. Reservations required at most estates at weekends. Harvest late August to October.
