Louisiana Purchase State Park

Arkansas State Park And National Historic Landmark Marking The Initial Point Of The 1815 Survey Of The Louisiana Purchase, From Which The Land Of Much Of The American Interior Was Measured. Reached By A Boardwalk Through Headwater Swamp. · Brinkley, Arkansas

In 1815 two survey teams cut through the Arkansas swamp until their lines crossed, drove a marker at the intersection, and from that single point surveyors measured the land of the Louisiana Purchase - the township and range grid that still governs property across much of the American interior begins here. The point was lost in the swamp for a century and rediscovered in 1921 by the witness trees the original crews had blazed. It is a National Historic Landmark, and it is reached by a nine-hundred-foot boardwalk through a headwater swamp of tupelo and cypress that is itself a rare surviving habitat. The whole visit is twenty minutes and it is free.

Highway 362, Lee and Monroe County line, Brinkley, Arkansas, United States

Open during daylight hours year-round with no entrance fee and no staff on site. There is no visitor centre; interpretation is on panels along the boardwalk. The boardwalk can flood or close after heavy rain or storm damage. Mosquitoes make a summer visit genuinely unpleasant without repellent. The park is administered from elsewhere in the Arkansas State Parks system.
