Lowell National Historical Park

National Historical Park · Lowell, Massachusetts

The first large-scale planned industrial city in America, built from nothing in the 1820s where the Merrimack River drops thirty feet, and powered by five and a half miles of canals dug to turn the water into work. Its mills were staffed largely by young farm women recruited from across New England and later by successive waves of immigrants. The park preserves the mills, the canals and the boarding houses — and in the Boott Cotton Mills a weave room where eighty-eight power looms still run, which is so loud that ear plugs are handed out at the door.
