The Oldest Intact Stone Fur Trade Fort In North America, Built By The Hudson'S Bay Company From 1830; The Place Where Treaty 1 Was Negotiated And Signed In 1871, The First Of The Numbered Treaties · St. Andrews, Manitoba

Lower Fort Garry is THE OLDEST INTACT STONE FUR TRADE FORT IN NORTH AMERICA - a walled Hudson's Bay Company post begun in 1830 on the Red River north of what is now Winnipeg, with its warehouses, the Big House, the fur loft and the men's quarters still standing inside the wall. That alone would make it significant. WHAT MAKES IT IMPORTANT IS WHAT HAPPENED HERE IN 1871: TREATY 1, THE FIRST OF THE NUMBERED TREATIES, was negotiated and signed on this ground between the Crown and the Anishinaabe and Swampy Cree nations of the region - the agreement on which the legal foundation of southern Manitoba rests, and whose terms and whose interpretation have been contested from the day it was signed. Parks Canada interprets both the fur trade and the treaty, and the treaty interpretation has been developed with the First Nations who are party to it. It is half an hour from Winnipeg.
