Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge

Wildlife Reserve · Chiefland, Florida

Fifty-three thousand acres where the Suwannee River finally reaches the Gulf, protecting one of the least altered river-delta coastlines left in the United States — no development, no seawalls, and twenty-six miles of shore that looks much as it did before anyone arrived. Shell Mound, at its northern end, is a five-acre Native American midden built up over roughly two and a half thousand years.

16450 Northwest 31st Place, Chiefland, Florida, 32626, United States

Refuge open daily during daylight hours, free of charge. Roads are unpaved and can flood after rain.
