LSU Rural Life Museum
Open Air Museum · Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Thirty-odd buildings moved onto a Baton Rouge hillside from across Louisiana and reassembled as a working record of how rural people actually lived — an open-air museum run by Louisiana State University on part of the old Burden estate. THE PLANTATION SECTION INCLUDES ORIGINAL SLAVE CABINS, a sick house, an overseer's house and a working sugar house, which is unusual: most Louisiana sites preserved the big house and let the quarters fall down. Around it are the Windrush Gardens, twenty-five acres of informal planting.
