Lu Xun Native Place (Shaoxing)

National 5A Tourist Attraction; The Writer’S Birthplace And The Settings Of His Stories · Shaoxing, Zhejiang

The quarter of Shaoxing where Lu Xun grew up, and where the settings of his stories are still standing - which makes it unusual among literary sites, because the places are not reconstructions but the actual buildings he wrote about. Lu Xun is the founding figure of modern Chinese literature, the man who wrote The True Story of Ah Q and Diary of a Madman and effectively invented the modern vernacular as a literary language, and every Chinese schoolchild reads him. Here are the family compound where he was born in 1881, the Sanwei Study where he was taught the classics and carved the character for early into his desk after being scolded for lateness, the Baicao Garden behind the house that he described as a child's paradise of insects and weeds, and the Xianheng Tavern, where his character Kong Yiji drank standing up because he could not afford a seat. The lanes between them are canal-side Shaoxing, with black-awninged boats, rice wine shops and stinky tofu stalls.
