Lucky Bay and Esperance
Western Australia'S South Coast Around Esperance, Where Lucky Bay Inside Cape Le Grand National Park Is Regularly Measured Among The Whitest Sand In The Country And Kangaroos Rest On The Beach Itself, With The Great Ocean Drive Looping Past Turquoise Bays And The Pink Lake · Esperance, Western Australia
Esperance sits on Western Australia's remote south coast, hours from any city in either direction, built around a coastline whose sand has repeatedly been measured among the whitest in the country and whose water runs an improbable turquoise even on an overcast day. Lucky Bay, a short drive east inside Cape Le Grand National Park, is the signature stop: a curve of that white sand backed by granite headlands, where western grey kangaroos regularly rest on the beach itself in the cooler parts of the day, close enough for a careful photo without approaching them. The town of Esperance is small and working rather than built for mass tourism, with the Great Ocean Drive looping past a string of turquoise bays, a wind farm on the headland and the startling pink of Pink Lake on quieter days. The distance is the honest trade-off here: Esperance is roughly 720 km from Perth, a genuine day's drive or a short flight, and nothing about visiting this coast is a quick side trip from anywhere else in the state.
Western Australia's south coast, about 720 km south-east of Perth, with Lucky Bay inside Cape Le Grand National Park, Esperance, Western Australia, Australia
Esperance town and its beaches have no gates and are open around the clock, though swimming after dark is not recommended anywhere on this coast. Cape Le Grand National Park, including Lucky Bay, is open during standard daylight hours with a vehicle entry fee through the Western Australian parks system, and the unsealed park roads are far easier to navigate before dusk. The Great Ocean Drive loop has no gate and can be driven at any time, though several lookout car parks are unlit at night. Esperance's museums and visitor centre keep standard small-town daytime hours and close on some public holidays. Camping inside Cape Le Grand is on a booked basis through the parks system, not a walk-up arrangement, and sites fill in the warmer months and school holidays.
