Luray Caverns
Show Cave · Luray, Virginia
The largest and most visited caverns in the eastern United States, found in 1878 by two men following a draught of cold air out of a sinkhole, and a National Natural Landmark. Its oddest feature is the Great Stalacpipe Organ — a Pentagon mathematician spent three years wiring rubber-tipped mallets to stalactites across three and a half acres of the cavern, so that the formations themselves are struck and the whole cave is the instrument.
