Ly Son Island

A Small Volcanic Island Group Off The Central Coast Known As The Kingdom Of Garlic, With Black Rock Coves, Green Terraced Fields, The Hang Pagoda Caves And The Hang Cau Coral Bay. Calm, Rural And Relatively Cheap, With Ferries Cancelled In Rough Seas Between September And December. For People Already On The Central Coast · Ly Son, Quang Ngai

Ly Son is a small volcanic island group about 30 km off the Quang Ngai coast, known across Vietnam as the kingdom of garlic. Terraced garlic and spring onion fields climb black volcanic soil, stacked-stone walls divide the plots, and the coast is a run of dark rock coves, small beaches and coral shallows. The sights are modest and spread out: the Hang Pagoda, built into a cave, the To Vo cliff viewpoint, the coral bay at Hang Cau and the old crater lakes at Thoi Loi and Mau Tam. A fast ferry from Sa Ky port takes roughly 40 to 60 minutes, and most visitors hire a scooter and sleep in a family homestay. It suits people already on the central coast who want a quiet, cheap island with real farming life. It is worth the detour from March to August. It is not worth the trip from September to December, when rough seas cancel ferries, and it is not a resort. Plan for plain rooms, island pace and few night options.

Ly Son island district, about 30 km off the Quang Ngai coast, reached by fast ferry from Sa Ky port, Ly Son, Quang Ngai, Vietnam

The island has no gates. The coast roads, the To Vo cliff viewpoint, Hang Cau bay, the beaches and the crater lake paths are FREE to reach at any hour, though few lights exist after dark. The Hang Pagoda and smaller shrines are open in daylight and are quiet at midday. Ferries run in daytime only, commonly a few sailings each morning and early afternoon, and are CLOSED to passengers whenever the sea is rough, often for days between September and December. Market stalls, cafes and the few ATMs keep shop hours and most close by early evening. Confirm the return sailing the day before, always, as sailings change with the sea.
