The M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark (M/S Museet for Sofart) in Helsingor tells the story of Denmark as a seafaring nation, from the Sound Dues that made Kronborg rich to the container ships of today. The museum is unusual because you cannot see it from the street: in 2013 it reopened underground, built into and around a disused concrete dry dock from the old Helsingor shipyard, designed by the architects BIG. You walk down sloping galleries that wrap around the empty dock, cross it on angled bridges and look up at the walls where ships were once repaired. The exhibitions mix ship models, paintings and trade goods with sailors' tattoos, pin-ups, navigation, the East India trade and the modern shipping business, with a lot of film and sound. It sits a few minutes on foot from Kronborg Castle, so most visitors combine the two in one day trip from Copenhagen. The honest caveat: the building is the star for many people, and visitors who expect real historic ships to board will find mostly models, objects and screens in fairly dim galleries.

The museum is usually open daily in the summer season (roughly late June to August) and closed on Mondays for much of the rest of the year, with shorter hours in winter and extra closures around Christmas and New Year - check the current schedule before you travel. Helsingor is roughly 45-55 minutes from Copenhagen Central by the Coast Line regional train (Kystbanen), which runs frequently; from Helsingor station the museum is about 10 minutes on foot along the harbour towards Kronborg. By car it is roughly 45-60 minutes on the E47/E55 motorway north. Individual tickets are bought at the desk on the day; only groups and booked guided tours need advance booking - confirm current rules and whether a combined ticket with Kronborg is offered.
