Maah Daah Hey Trail

Public Land · Bismarck, North Dakota

A 144-mile non-motorised singletrack running the length of the North Dakota badlands, from the Burning Coal Vein campground south of Medora to the CCC campground south of Watford City, almost entirely across the Little Missouri National Grassland. It is the longest continuous singletrack mountain bike trail in America. The name is Mandan, generally rendered as an area that has been or will be around for a long time, and the trail is marked by wooden posts carrying a turtle, the Lakota symbol for patience and determination.

2000 Miriam Circle, Bismarck, North Dakota, 58501, United States

FREE and open 24 hours a year round, across 144 miles of the Little Missouri National Grassland. There are no gates and nothing to book for the trail itself. ⚠ THE TRAIL IS EFFECTIVELY CLOSED BY WEATHER RATHER THAN BY SEASON: badlands clay is impassable when wet and riding it wet does lasting damage, so the practical season runs from late spring to mid-autumn on dry ground. The nine United States Forest Service campgrounds along the route are primitive, small and seasonal. The administering office is the Dakota Prairie Grasslands supervisor in Bismarck, several hundred miles from the trail.
