Mactaquac Provincial Park

A Large River Park Beside The Mactaquac Dam With A Campground, A Beach, A Golf Course, Boating, Cycling Trails And A Salmon Viewing Area. A Summer Base Near Fredericton, With A Lot Of Facilities · Mactaquac, New Brunswick

Mactaquac Provincial Park sits on the headpond of the Saint John River, above the Mactaquac Dam, about 20 km west of Fredericton off Highway 105 in York County, New Brunswick (confirm the distance). The river here was widened into a long lake in the 1960s when the hydroelectric dam was built, and the park spreads along the shore with a large wooded campground, a sand beach, picnic areas, boat launches and a golf course beside it (confirm which facilities belong to the park). Walking and cycling trails run through hardwood and pine, and a salmon facility near the dam lets visitors learn how Atlantic salmon are kept in the river. The park is a summer base for Fredericton families and for travellers on the Trans-Canada route, and it works well for a week of camping with side trips to King Landing Historical Settlement and the covered bridge at Hartland. Water levels move with dam operation, and the park is busiest from late June to early September.

The park is operated as a seasonal provincial park, with the campground, gatehouse, beach and supervised day-use area normally open from about mid May to early or mid October, so confirm the exact dates with New Brunswick provincial parks before travelling. The golf course, canteen and rental services keep their own calendars, which are longest in July and August. Trails and the shore may be open in daylight outside the season, but the road can be gated and washrooms shut. In winter the ground is used for walking and snowshoeing when snow allows (confirm). Fish facility hours near the dam differ from the park and change by season.
