Madaba, The City Of Mosaics, Holds The Byzantine Madaba Map (6th Century), The Oldest Surviving Map Of The Holy Land, In The Church Of Saint George. Mount Nebo, The Traditional Site Where Moses Viewed The Promised Land And Was Buried, Has A Franciscan Memorial Church And Mosaics, With Views To Jerusalem And The Dead Sea On Clear Days. · Madaba, Madaba

Madaba is a small, friendly city on the King's Highway about 30 km south-west of Amman, known as the city of mosaics. In the Greek Orthodox Church of Saint George (1896) lies the Madaba Mosaic Map, a 6th-century floor that shows Jerusalem and the Holy Land, made from around two million tiny stones. The Archaeological Park, the Church of the Apostles, the Burnt Palace and the Madaba Museum hold more floors, and a mosaic school teaches the craft. About 10 km west, Mount Nebo is the traditional place where Moses viewed the Promised Land. A Franciscan memorial church shelters Byzantine mosaics, and a terrace looks over the Dead Sea, the Jordan valley and, on clear days, Jerusalem. The honest picture is two modest sites. The map is a small floor area, haze can hide the view, and each place takes about half a day at most. Together they make a calm, worthwhile day trip. Dress modestly, skip flash, and pick a clear morning or late afternoon for the terrace view. A taxi from Amman is the simplest way to link both places in one trip.
