Madakaripura Waterfall
The Tallest Waterfall In Java, At The Head Of A Slot Canyon You Wade Into Through Falling Water, Where Gajah Mada Is Said To Have Withdrawn At The End Of His Life · Probolinggo, East Java
You do not look at Madakaripura from a viewing platform. YOU WADE INTO IT. The approach runs up a river into a NARROW SLOT CANYON whose walls close in until they are a few metres apart and hundreds of metres high, and WATER FALLS OFF BOTH SIDES THE WHOLE WAY - a constant curtain you walk through, soaked within a minute, with a raincoat that does not help. At the end the canyon opens into a circular chamber and THE TALLEST WATERFALL IN JAVA drops into it from far above through a gap in the rock. GAJAH MADA, THE MAJAPAHIT PRIME MINISTER WHO SWORE TO UNIFY THE ARCHIPELAGO, IS SAID TO HAVE WITHDRAWN HERE at the end of his life, which gives the place a weight it would have anyway. IT FLOODS, AND PEOPLE HAVE DIED IN IT. One narrow canyon, one way in and out, and a river that rises fast - if it has rained upstream, do not go in whatever the gate tells you. You wade the whole way in and you will be soaked within a minute of starting.
Lumbang, Probolinggo Regency, East Java, Probolinggo, East Java, Indonesia
OPEN IN DAYLIGHT with an entry fee, a parking charge and a RAINCOAT HIRE that everybody takes and nobody stays dry in. A GUIDE IS EFFECTIVELY MANDATORY and is arranged at the entrance - the walk is a river wade with slippery rock and the guides know the conditions. IT CLOSES AFTER HEAVY RAIN AND SHOULD BE TREATED AS CLOSED WHENEVER THE RIVER IS UP: this is a narrow canyon with one way in and out, it floods fast, and there have been fatalities. THE WALK IN IS ROUGHLY TWENTY TO THIRTY MINUTES each way from the car park. IT SITS ON THE BROMO ROAD near Probolinggo and is almost always done as a stop on the way to or from the volcano. Everything you carry will get wet.
