Madison Historic District
Heritage District · Madison, Indiana
An Ohio River town of about twelve thousand whose downtown is a National Historic Landmark district of roughly 133 blocks, generally described as the largest contiguous one in the United States. Madison was a major river port before the railroads moved the trade west, and the effect of that early wealth followed by a century of stagnation is a downtown that was never rebuilt — Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate and Classical Revival buildings standing in continuous streets rather than as isolated survivors. The Lanier Mansion, an 1844 Greek Revival house above the river, is the set piece.
601 West First Street, Madison, Indiana, 47250, United States
The district is a working town, open at all times. Shops keep daytime hours and many close Mondays and Tuesdays. The Lanier Mansion keeps state historic site hours and is closed on some weekdays and holidays — check before travelling.
