Magnolia Plantation and Gardens
National Register Of Historic Places · Charleston, South Carolina
Held by the same family since 1676 and opened to paying visitors in 1870 to raise money after the war, which makes it the oldest public garden in America. Where Middleton Place five minutes up the road is geometry, Magnolia is deliberately the opposite — a Romantic garden of winding paths, a white bridge over black water and azaleas planted to look accidental. It also holds five original slave cabins and was among the first plantations in the country to interpret them properly.
3550 Ashley River Road, Charleston, South Carolina, 29414, United States
Open daily, generally 9 AM to 4:30 or 5:30 PM depending on season, closed on a small number of major holidays. ⚠ GENERAL ADMISSION COVERS THE GARDEN AND GROUNDS ONLY — the house tour, the From Slavery to Freedom cabin tour, the Audubon Swamp Garden, the nature train and the boat tour are EACH CHARGED SEPARATELY on top, and a full day can double the entry price. Decide what you want before the ticket desk. Late March to April is peak azalea season and the busiest time of year.
