Mahmut Bey Mosque
UNESCO World Heritage Site (Wooden Hypostyle Mosques Of Medieval Anatolia, 2023); Built 1366, Known As The Nail Less Mosque For Its Joinery · Kastamonu, Kastamonu
Seventeen kilometres outside Kastamonu, in a village called Kasaba, stands a small mosque built in 1366 that is known locally as the nail-less mosque because its timber frame is joined rather than fastened. That is not why UNESCO inscribed it in 2023. The reason is inside: the beams, the ceiling and the column heads carry their original painted decoration - red, black and blue vegetal patterns, laid on six and a half centuries ago and never covered - and it is the best-preserved painted wooden interior of the five mosques in that serial listing. The carved entrance door was good enough that it was taken to the Ethnography Museum in Ankara, and a copy hangs in its place. It is a working village mosque with no staff, no ticket and no visitor centre, and whether you get inside has often depended on finding whoever holds the key, which in the village is a normal thing to ask and usually works.
Kasaba Koyu, Mahmut Bey Camii, Kastamonu Merkez, Kastamonu, Kastamonu, Turkiye
A village mosque, open for prayer and otherwise often locked. ACCESS HAS DEPENDED ON FINDING THE KEYHOLDER, who lives nearby and is usually willing; arrangements have improved since the 2023 inscription but should not be assumed. Best visited in the morning or around prayer times when someone is there. Winter is cold and the village road can be snowy.
