Mahone Bay
A Town Settled In 1754 By Protestant Settlers From Europe, Known For Its Three Waterfront Churches That Create One Of Canada'S Best Known Small Town Views, Its Wooden Boat Building, And An August Wooden Boat Festival. Close To Lunenburg (A Separate, Live Row). · Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia
Mahone Bay is a small harbour town on Nova Scotia's South Shore, about an hour from Halifax, settled in 1754 by Protestant settlers from Europe. It is best known for one view: three churches standing side by side along the water, which is seen from the corner of the main road into town and appears on many a postcard. The town is also a boat-building place, with an August Wooden Boat Festival, and its main street is lined with craft shops, galleries, cafes and a teapot shop. It suits a slow stop, a coffee, a browse and a walk along the waterfront. It is small, so do not expect big sights. In summer the main street gets crowded and parking is tight. Lunenburg is about 15 minutes away and is a separate row, as is Peggy's Cove. Allow one to three hours. Autumn colour is lovely, and winter is quiet, with some shops closed, so confirm hours in the off season before you drive out. It is a charming stop, but not a full-day destination.

Mahone Bay has no gate or ticket. The town is open to walk at any hour, and the waterfront and church view are free. Shops, galleries and cafes keep their own hours and are busiest from late spring to early autumn, commonly opening mid-morning and closing late afternoon, with some open longer in July and August. Many small businesses cut their days or close in winter, so confirm before you drive out in January or February. The Wooden Boat Festival takes place in August, and shops tend to extend hours then. Church interiors may be open only for services or special events, so treat them as exterior views unless a sign says otherwise.
