Makapuʻu Point Light
National Register Of Historic Places · Honolulu, Hawaii
A lighthouse on the eastern point of Oahu that carries the largest lens of any lighthouse in the United States, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. It is reached by a paved two-mile round-trip trail climbing the headland from the Kaiwi coast, and the walk is the attraction as much as the light - it looks down on Manana Island, out across the channel to Molokai and Lanai, and in winter over water where humpback whales pass close inshore.
Kalanianaʻole Highway, Honolulu, Hawaii, 96825, United States
The trail is open daily during daylight hours and is FREE, with a free car park that fills early. ⚠ THE LIGHTHOUSE ITSELF IS AN ACTIVE COAST GUARD AID TO NAVIGATION AND IS CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC - the trail goes to a viewpoint above and beside it, not to the building. There is NO SHADE and NO WATER on the trail. The gate closes in the evening and cars left inside are locked in.
