Makoshika State Park

Montana State Park · Glendive, Montana

Montana's largest state park, eleven and a half thousand acres of badlands on the edge of Glendive in the far east of the state — pine-studded ridges, hoodoos and eroded gullies cut into the Hell Creek Formation, which is the rock that produced Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops. Ten dinosaur species have been excavated inside the park boundary. The name comes from a Lakota phrase usually rendered as bad land or bad earth. It looks nothing whatever like the Montana on the postcards and it is six hours from Glacier.

1301 Snyder Avenue, Glendive, Montana, 59330, United States

Open year round on a Montana state park vehicle fee, generally sunrise to sunset for day use with the campground open to registered guests. The visitor centre keeps seasonal hours and is reduced or closed in winter. UNPAVED ROADS AND TRAILS BECOME IMPASSABLE WHEN WET — this is bentonite clay and a rainstorm closes the interior of the park in practice. Ranger programmes and fossil talks run in summer.
