Malbork Castle

UNESCO World Heritage Site: Castle Of The Teutonic Order In Malbork (1997). The Largest Castle In The World By Land Area, A Brick Fortress Monastery Begun By The Teutonic Knights In 1274 And Made Their Capital In 1309, Heavily Damaged In 1945 And Rebuilt Over Decades · Malbork, Pomeranian

Malbork is the headquarters the Teutonic Knights built in red brick on the bank of the Nogat river, and by land area it is counted as the largest castle in the world. The scale is what lingers: three separate castles, the High, Middle and Lower, each with its own walls, moats and gates, laid out across a site that takes most of a day to cross. The Order, a crusading monastic brotherhood, made it the capital of its state in 1309, and the brick halls, the grand master's palace and the chapel with its golden door reflect the wealth of a power that ran the Baltic for a century and a half. Much of it was wrecked in 1945 and has been rebuilt over decades, so some rooms are restoration, not original. Visits are by audio guide or a booked guide, and the museum inside holds amber, weapons and armour. Gdansk is about 60 km away by train, which makes this an easy day trip, and it rewards anyone who likes brick, armour or the long story of the Baltic.

Open most days of the year, with longer hours in the main season from spring to autumn and shorter hours in winter, and it is commonly closed on Mondays outside the summer season and on a few holidays; confirm which days apply when you plan. Entry is by timed ticket, and the last entry is well before closing so that the audio-guided route can be completed, which takes several hours. Some outer parts of the grounds can be entered without the museum ticket; the interiors, courtyards of the High Castle and exhibitions need a ticket. The evening light-and-sound show runs on selected dates in the warm months and uses a separate ticket. Always check the official schedule for the exact days before travelling by train, because rooms close for restoration without much notice.
