A Glacier Fed Lake About 22 Km Long, The Largest Natural Lake In The Canadian Rockies, Inside Jasper National Park And The UNESCO Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks Site (1984). Spirit Island, A Tiny Island Seen From A Boat Cruise, Is Among The Most Photographed Views In The Rockies. The Road Is Closed Or Restricted In Winter. · Jasper, Alberta
Maligne Lake is a long glacier-fed lake at the end of Maligne Lake Road, about 45 km from Jasper townsite inside Jasper National Park. At roughly 22 km it is the largest natural lake in the Canadian Rockies, and the park is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. The famous view is Spirit Island, a tiny wooded islet that you only reach by boat, so most visitors pay for the cruise run by a single operator; book ahead in summer and confirm the season, which is roughly May to October. Without a cruise you still get the boat house, a short shoreline walk and mountains rising straight from the water. It suits families, photographers and anyone who wants one big Rockies lake without a long hike. It is crowded in July and August, and the road is a bear and wildlife corridor, so drive slowly. A Parks Canada pass is needed. Allow half a day with the cruise, or two hours for a quick visit. Winter access is limited.
Long glacier-fed lake at the end of Maligne Lake Road, about 45 km from Jasper townsite in Jasper National Park, with a boat house, cruise dock and a cafe at the near end, Jasper, Alberta, Canada
The lake itself is open all year as part of the national park, but the services at the near end, including the cruise dock, boat rentals and cafe, run mainly in the warm season, roughly May to October, with the busiest schedule in July and August. Exact cruise times change by season and by year, so check the operator before you drive out. Maligne Lake Road can have snow and ice from autumn to spring, with closures or winter-tire advice, and wildlife warnings can close parts of the area. A valid Parks Canada pass is needed for the park. Daylight is long in summer, short in winter, and the road is quiet after dark.
