Mall of America

Covered Market · Bloomington, Minnesota

The largest shopping and entertainment complex in the United States, in Bloomington just south of the Minneapolis airport, opened in 1992 on the site of the old Metropolitan Stadium. Around 520 shops are arranged on four levels in a hollow rectangle around a seven-acre indoor theme park with roller coasters in it, and an aquarium runs underneath. It takes roughly forty million visits a year — more than Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon and Graceland put together — and a large share of those people flew in specifically. Minnesota charges no sales tax on clothing, which is the reason a good many of them come.

60 East Broadway, Bloomington, Minnesota, 55425, United States

Open daily year round. Shops generally 10:00 to 20:00 Monday to Saturday and 11:00 to 19:00 on Sunday, with restaurants, cinemas and the comedy club running later; hours extend in December and vary on public holidays. Nickelodeon Universe and SEA LIFE keep their own hours and are separately ticketed. Parking in the attached ramps is free.
