Mamure Castle and Anemurium
A Large Seafront Fortress Of Roman Origin Rebuilt By Crusaders And The Karamanids, With The Ruined Roman City Of Anemurium Six Kilometres West At The Southernmost Point Of Anatolia · Anamur, Mersin
Anamur sits on the southernmost point of Anatolia, a long slow drive from anywhere, which is why the two things here are so quiet. Mamure Castle stands directly on the beach - a genuinely enormous fortress with thirty-nine towers and a moat, Roman in origin, rebuilt by Crusaders and finished by the Karamanids, and close enough to the water that waves break against the outer wall. It has been through a restoration that conservationists have criticised and has been closed in parts while that went on. Six kilometres west, at the cape itself, lies Anemurium: a Roman and Byzantine city spread down a hillside to its own beach, with a necropolis where the tombs still stand to roof height and enough of them that you walk through streets of the dead. On a clear day you can see Cyprus, seventy kilometres across the water. The town between them grows bananas, which are a protected local product and nothing like the imported ones.
Bozdogan Mahallesi, Mamure Kalesi, Anamur, Anamur, Mersin, Turkiye
Both keep daytime hours with an earlier winter close and charge separately. MAMURE HAS BEEN PARTLY OR WHOLLY CLOSED FOR RESTORATION at times and the work has been criticised - confirm what is open before making the drive. Anemurium is open ground with a ticket booth. The coast road to Anamur is long and slow from every direction.
