Manassas National Battlefield Park

Battlefield · Manassas, Virginia

The ground of both Battles of Bull Run — the first major land battle of the Civil War in July 1861, which Washington society drove out to watch with picnic baskets and then fled from, and the far larger and bloodier Second Manassas in August 1862. It is where Thomas J. Jackson acquired the name Stonewall, and it survives as five thousand acres of open Piedmont farmland inside the northern Virginia suburbs.
