Manchester Village

Heritage District · Manchester, Vermont

The old south end of Manchester, where the streets are lined with mature trees and large white houses set back behind broad lawns, and the pavements are marble - four miles of it by 1890, cut from the town's own mills and laid from 1850 onward, which is why walking here sounds and feels different from walking anywhere else in Vermont. The Equinox has stood at the centre of it since the resort trade arrived in the late nineteenth century, and the whole village is a National Register district. Hildene, Robert Todd Lincoln's house, is two and a half kilometres down the road.

3567 Main Street, Manchester, Vermont, 05254, United States

A public village street, FREE and open at all times, with free parking on and around Main Street. ⚠ THE MARBLE SIDEWALKS ARE THE ATTRACTION - four miles of them by 1890, first laid in 1850 and cut from the town's own mills - and Main Street is broad, gently graded and properly paved, which makes this one of the easier village walks in Vermont. ⚠ THE MARBLE IS OLD STONE: worn smooth in places, with slabs lifted and tilted by tree roots and frost, and GENUINELY SLIPPERY WHEN WET, FROSTY OR LEAF-COVERED. ⚠ THIS IS MANCHESTER VILLAGE, NOT MANCHESTER CENTER - two different villages in the same town, which visitors confuse constantly. The Village is the historic south end with the marble, the Equinox and Hildene; the CENTER, a few minutes north, has the designer outlets, the everyday restaurants and the Northshire Bookstore. ⚠ EAT IN THE CENTER IF YOU WANT CHOICE; the Village has the Equinox and a few good expensive places. Route 7A traffic runs through and is heavy in the first half of October - come in the morning. HILDENE is 2.4 km south and is a separate destination with its own admission.
