Manhattan Project National Historical Park
Historic Site · Richland, Washington
The Washington unit of a national park split across three states, built around B Reactor at Hanford - the first large-scale nuclear reactor ever built, which went critical in September 1944 and produced the plutonium used in the Trinity test and in the bomb dropped on Nagasaki. The reactor stands essentially as it was left, control room included. It is one of very few places where the physical machinery of the atomic age can be walked into.

The Hanford unit is not a place you can simply drive to. B Reactor is reached only on a free guided tour, run seasonally by the Department of Energy and the National Park Service, booked in advance online, departing by bus from Richland. The season is roughly spring to autumn and tours fill quickly. Verify current status and booking before making any travel plans, because access has been suspended for extended periods more than once.
