Mani Peninsula

Stone Tower House Villages On A Bare Limestone Peninsula Below Taygetos, With The Diros Caves, The Byzantine Chapels Of The Deep Mani And Cape Tenaro, The Ancient Gate To Hades · Areopoli, Peloponnese

The Mani is the middle of the three peninsulas that hang from the southern Peloponnese, a spine of bare limestone running down from the Taygetos mountains to Cape Tenaro, the southernmost point of mainland Greece. It is famous for its tower houses: tall, blank-walled stone keeps built by feuding clans who fought each other as readily as they fought outsiders, and who kept a stubborn half-independence under Ottoman rule. Areopoli is the small capital of the Deep Mani, where the Mavromichalis family is said to have raised the flag of the 1821 rising. South of it the land empties out into stone villages, hundreds of small Byzantine chapels, the flooded Diros cave, and a walk to a lighthouse past the spot the ancients called a gate to Hades. The greener west coast around Kardamyli and Stoupa has pebble coves and olive terraces. Honest caveats: you need a car, roads are narrow and petrol stations few, there is almost no shade, and in July and August the Deep Mani is brutally hot. Spring and autumn are far better.

Mani peninsula, the middle finger of the Peloponnese, Lakonia and Messinia: Areopoli, Vathia and Cape Tenaro in the south, Kardamyli and Stoupa in the west, Areopoli, Peloponnese, Greece

The Mani is a region, not a gated site: the villages, the coast road, Vathia and the walk to the Cape Tenaro lighthouse are open at all hours and free. The Diros cave (Vlychada) near Pyrgos Dirou runs boat tours through the day, longer in summer and shorter in winter, with the last tour well before dark and timed or queue-numbered tickets in high season - confirm current hours and whether it is closed for high water after heavy rain. The small museums at Diros and at Old Kardamyli keep state or municipal hours, short in winter and closed on the main public holidays. Most Byzantine chapels are locked and opened by a villager who holds the key - ask at the village cafe. Nothing needs booking except rooms at Easter, in August and on spring and autumn weekends, and a hire car in August.
