Manito Park
Formal Garden · Spokane, Washington
Ninety acres on Spokane South Hill holding five distinct formal gardens and a conservatory, all free. The centrepiece is the Duncan Garden, a three-acre Renaissance-style formal parterre laid out in 1913 with a granite fountain on axis, and the others range from a Japanese garden built with Spokane sister city Nishinomiya to a rose garden and a lilac collection - Spokane is the Lilac City and this is where that comes from. It is a city park rather than a botanical institution, and it is better than that description suggests.
1702 South Grand Boulevard, Spokane, Washington, 99203, United States
Park open daily, dawn to dusk, FREE - including all the gardens. The Gaiser Conservatory keeps shorter hours, generally daytime and closed some days in winter. Duncan Garden and the Japanese garden are outdoor and open whenever the park is. There is no admission charge to any part of it at any time of year.
