Manitoulin Island

Manitoulin District / Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory · Little Current, Ontario

Manitoulin Island, in northern Lake Huron in Ontario, is the largest freshwater island in the world, with hundreds of inland lakes and a rolling landscape of farm, forest and limestone escarpment. It is the homeland of the Anishinaabe, and several First Nations communities live here, including Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory, where Indigenous-led cultural tours and events are offered (confirm). Visitors come for the Cup and Saucer Trail on the escarpment, Bridal Veil Falls at Kagawong, quiet beaches, small harbour towns such as Gore Bay and Little Current, and autumn colour. You reach it by the seasonal Chi-Cheemaun ferry from Tobermory to South Baymouth, about two hours, or by the Little Current swing bridge. Services are limited, distances are long, and the pace is slow. Plan two to four days, and reserve ferry and rooms early. Do not expect big attractions: the draw is landscape, culture and quiet, and the Cup and Saucer hike is the one effort worth making.

The island is open year round, but most visitor services are seasonal. The Chi-Cheemaun ferry usually runs from spring to early autumn on a schedule that changes by year, and vehicle reservations are strongly advised in summer, so confirm dates and sailings. The Little Current swing bridge is the road link all year and opens for boat traffic on a published schedule, which can cause short waits. Many shops, cafes, tour operators and campgrounds close from October to May. Cultural tours and events, including the Wiikwemkoong powwow, have fixed dates, so confirm with the community or tour operator before you plan.
