Manresa State Beach

State Park · Watsonville, California

Manresa State Beach lies in Santa Cruz County near La Selva Beach, on the northern curve of Monterey Bay and about 20-30 minutes by car from the city of Santa Cruz. A wide, sandy beach runs below sandy bluffs and is reached by a long stairway from the bluff-top - confirm the length and condition. Dunes, surf fishing and, in season, clamming - confirm the rules - draw locals more than tourists. The water is cold, the surf breaks hard and rip currents are common, so this is a beach for walking, fishing, bonfires and watching sunsets rather than for swimming. Fog often covers the bay in summer mornings and returns at night. A tent camping area sits on the bluff above the sand - confirm the number of sites, the walk from the car and the booking window. Sunset State Beach continues the same shoreline a few miles to the south and is a separate park. Expect wind, few services, a quiet weekday mood and a day-use fee at the entrance - confirm the current amount. Plan a half day for the beach, or a night or two if you camp.

Day use runs about 8 AM to sunset, and the campground has its own check-in and check-out times, normally booked ahead through the State Parks reservation system - confirm both. A pay station or kiosk collects the day-use fee, which has been around 10 dollars a vehicle; confirm the current amount. Winter storms can close the stairway or cut access roads, and big swells can wash across the beach at high tide. Bonfires are allowed only in set rings and during fire-safe periods - confirm. Cell signal is usually fine on the bluff. Check the State Parks page for closures on the day you go.
