Mardi Gras World

Specialty Museum · New Orleans, Louisiana

A working float den on the riverfront where Blaine Kern Studios builds a large share of the floats that roll in the New Orleans parades, open to the public on a guided tour. IT IS NOT A MUSEUM — it is a warehouse full of sculptors, painters and papier-mâché in progress, and what you see depends entirely on where the build cycle is when you walk in. Come in January and it is chaos; come in March and the floors are half empty. The tour includes king cake and lets you try on costumes, which is exactly as unserious as it sounds and also the point.

1380 Port of New Orleans Place, New Orleans, Louisiana, 70130, United States

Open daily on GUIDED TOURS ONLY, running roughly every half hour through the day and taking about an hour; the last tour leaves well before closing. Book online for a small saving. WHAT IS ON THE FLOOR DEPENDS ON THE BUILD CYCLE — fullest November to early February, emptiest in the weeks after Mardi Gras. Parts of the building are hired out for private events and can close at short notice, so ring on the day if making a special trip. Paid parking on site.
