Marfa
Old Town · Marfa, Texas
A high-desert railroad town of under two thousand people at 4,700 feet, which became one of the most improbably famous small towns in America after the minimalist artist Donald Judd moved here in the 1970s and began installing permanent large-scale work in a decommissioned army fort. It now runs on contemporary art, design-press pilgrimage, the unexplained Marfa Lights and a 1930s courthouse square that has barely changed.
