Margaree Valley

A Quiet Green River Valley On Cape Breton Island Known For Atlantic Salmon Fishing On The Margaree River, A Salmon Museum In North East Margaree, Farm Stands, Small Galleries And Gaelic And Acadian Culture. A Calm Part Of The Cabot Trail Loop, With Covered Bridges And Fishing Pools And Few Crowds Compared With The Highlands · Margaree Valley, Nova Scotia

The Margaree Valley is a quiet river valley on the western side of Cape Breton Island, where the Margaree River winds past hayfields, white farmhouses and hills about 30 km north of Whycocomagh and not far from the Cabot Trail. The river is famous for its Atlantic salmon, which run up from the sea each year, and anglers have come since the 1800s to fish its named pools. North East Margaree has a salmon museum on this history, and a covered bridge stands near Margaree Forks. The valley mixes Scottish Gaelic and Acadian French heritage, so you hear fiddle music, see small churches and find farm stands, bakeries and galleries along quiet roads. The mood is calm rather than dramatic, and autumn colour in October is the most photographed time. Visitors come to fish, drive slowly, paddle or simply stay put for a day. Services are scattered, so confirm museum and gallery hours, and read salmon rules before casting.

The valley roads and river viewpoints are open all year, but visitor services run roughly from late May or June to mid-October. The salmon museum, galleries, farm stands and some cafes keep summer hours and may close completely in winter, so confirm opening days and times before driving out. Salmon fishing has regulated seasons and daily rules set by the federal and provincial authorities, so check the current dates before you go. Driving the valley, viewing the river and enjoying the scenery are free at any time. Winter brings snow and a very quiet valley with limited services.
