Porlamar, the main town, mixes shopping streets built for that duty-free trade with an ordinary working waterfront, while the real draw sits along the north and east coasts: Playa El Agua, a long stretch of golden sand backed by coconut palms, and Playa Parguito, a livelier beach popular with surfers for its steadier swell. International arrivals have fallen well behind the island's historic peak in recent years, and present-day visitors are more often Venezuelan or regional than the European charter crowds of decades past, but the beaches themselves remain genuinely excellent and the island's resort infrastructure, while uneven in its current condition, is real and extensive compared to anywhere else on Venezuela's coast.

The beaches themselves have no gate or fixed hours and can be visited at any daylight time. Margarita has its own international airport, though current scheduled international connectivity should be confirmed directly rather than assumed, since it has declined substantially from the island's historic peak; domestic flights from Caracas run more reliably.
