Marielyst
Summer House And Beach Resort On The Baltic Side Of Falster, With A Long Fine Sand Beach That Is Among The Most Popular In South Denmark · Marielyst, Region Zealand
Marielyst is a summer-house and beach resort on the east coast of the island of Falster, roughly 12 km east of Nykobing Falster and about 1 hour 45 minutes by car south of Copenhagen. Its reason to exist is the beach: a long, straight strip of fine pale sand facing the Baltic, running for kilometres north and south of the small resort centre, backed by dunes, a sea dike and thousands of holiday homes in the pine woods. Danes, Germans and Swedes come in July for gentle, fairly shallow Baltic water that suits children better than the rougher North Sea, for long evenings of ice cream and crowded fish-and-chip counters, and for a week in a rented summer house. South of the resort, the Boto area adds a forest, a bird lagoon and a quiet naturist stretch. It is a tier 3 place: pleasant, easy and family-friendly, not a sight in itself. The honest caveat: it is a busy, rather commercial resort in July and a very quiet, half-shuttered one from October to April, so choose your season on purpose.

The beach is open to everyone at all hours, all year, and free. The resort itself is seasonal: shops, cafes, ice cream stands and beach rentals run fully roughly from late June to mid August, partly in May, June and September, and many close from October to Easter - expect only a supermarket, a few restaurants and pizza places off season, and confirm opening patterns locally. By car from Copenhagen take the E47/E55 motorway south over the Faro bridges (no toll) to Nykobing Falster, then follow signs to Marielyst, roughly 150 km. By public transport take the train from Copenhagen to Nykobing Falster (roughly 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes), then a local bus to Marielyst in about 20-25 minutes - check Rejseplanen. Book summer houses months ahead for July.
