Marina City
Modern Architecture · Chicago, Illinois
Bertrand Goldberg's pair of sixty-storey concrete towers on the river, finished in 1967 and shaped like corn cobs because the flats are wedges radiating from a central core, with the bottom nineteen floors of each tower a spiral car park open to the air. It was the first significant post-war residential development in an American downtown, built to stop the middle class leaving for the suburbs.
