Marine Corps War Memorial
Memorial · Arlington, Virginia
Felix de Weldon's bronze of the second flag-raising on Mount Suribachi, taken directly from Joe Rosenthal's photograph and dedicated in 1954 on a ridge in Arlington with the whole of Washington behind it. The six figures stand thirty-two feet high on a granite base inscribed with every action the Marine Corps has fought since 1775, and a real flag flies from the pole around the clock by presidential proclamation.
