Reached By Boat From Fishing Villages Such As Teacapan, Hot And Very Humid · Escuinapa, Sinaloa
Marismas Nacionales is the largest mangrove system on the Pacific coast of Mexico, a maze of lagoons, estuaries and tidal channels shared by southern Sinaloa and northern Nayarit and recognised by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve in 2008. Teacapan, a fishing village at the southern tip of Sinaloa about 60 km from Escuinapa, is the usual gateway. There is no visitor centre or marked trail: you hire a local fisherman and his boat and glide through mangrove tunnels, past herons, egrets, roseate spoonbills, ospreys and the occasional crocodile on a mud bank. Shrimp farms and fishing nets are part of the scene, since this water feeds the whole local economy. It suits birdwatchers, photographers and patient travellers who like quiet, and it is worth the detour from Mazatlan, about 150 km north, for a day or two in the cooler months. It is not worth it in the hot, humid summer, or if you need facilities and fixed schedules. Check current Sinaloa travel advice calmly before you go and drive by day.

There are no gates or fixed hours: the mangroves are open water and FREE to look at from the shore, but you need a boat to enter them, and boats are paid. Fishermen usually go out at dawn and many are happy to take visitors from early morning to mid-afternoon. Birds are most active at first light and late afternoon. Tides change the depth of the channels, so ask your boatman which hours work. There is no ticket office, so nothing is CLOSED on a set day, but boats may not run in storms or on public holidays. Confirm times locally the day before.
