Marmaris is a harbour resort town at the head of a long, pine-clad inlet where the Aegean meets the Mediterranean, in Mugla province on the south-west coast of Turkiye. Dalaman airport is about 90-110 km away, and the Greek island of Rhodes lies just across the water, linked by a short ferry in season (confirm). The town grew around a small Ottoman castle built about 1522 for Sultan Suleiman before his campaign against Rhodes, and its old quarter of whitewashed lanes still sits below the castle hill. Today the waterfront is a long promenade of cafes, boat jetties and a large marina, with a bazaar behind and nightclubs on Bar Street, which is loud until the early hours in summer. Marmaris is one of the main gateways for gulet cruises along the Turquoise Coast and for day trips to nearby bays and the Dalyan river, and winter is quiet with many venues shut (confirm all hours, prices and dates).
