Martha's Vineyard

Island · Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts

An island of about a hundred square miles off the south coast of Cape Cod, reachable only by boat or small plane, holding six towns that are genuinely unlike one another — Oak Bluffs with its painted gingerbread cottages and the oldest operating platform carousel in America, whaling-money Edgartown in white clapboard, the working port of Vineyard Haven, and up-island Chilmark and Aquinnah where the road runs through farmland to clay cliffs on Wampanoag tribal land. Jaws was filmed here in 1974 and the island has never quite stopped trading on it.

Martha's Vineyard, Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts, 02568, United States

An inhabited island, always open, reachable only by ferry or small plane. The Steamship Authority from Woods Hole is the only car route and summer vehicle reservations sell out months ahead.
