Maryhill Museum of Art

Art Museum · Goldendale, Washington

A concrete mansion on a bluff over the Columbia River Gorge, begun in 1907 by the road-builder and entrepreneur Samuel Hill for a Quaker agricultural colony that never materialised, and converted mid-construction into a museum on the advice of Loie Fuller. It opened in 1940, nine years after Hill's death, and holds an eccentric collection - Rodin sculptures and drawings, Romanian royal furniture, Native American baskets, and a set of French fashion mannequins made after the Second World War - in the middle of empty grassland a hundred miles from any city.

35 Maryhill Museum Drive, Goldendale, Washington, 98620, United States

SEASONAL - generally open daily from mid-March to mid-November and CLOSED FOR THE WINTER, usually 10 AM to 5 PM. This is the most important practical fact about the museum and the commonest wasted journey. The Stonehenge Memorial three miles east is open year round, free, at all hours.
