Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Historic District · Cambridge, Massachusetts

A campus along the Charles River in Cambridge, founded in 1861 and settled here in 1916, whose main buildings are joined by an eight-hundred-foot corridor that students call the Infinite. It is one of the most consequential scientific institutions on earth and it is also, unexpectedly, an architecture tour: Eero Saarinen's chapel and auditorium, Alvar Aalto's undulating dormitory, Steven Holl's sponge of a residence hall, and Frank Gehry's Stata Center, which looks like a building that has been dropped.

77 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 02139, United States

The campus is open and free to walk at any hour, including the Infinite Corridor, Killian Court, the chapel and the outdoor sculpture. Free student-led tours run on a published schedule mainly in term time and are booked online. The MIT Museum is separately ticketed and is in Kendall Square, a short walk away, not on the main campus. Red Line to Kendall or Central.
