Massachusetts Street
Nightlife District · Lawrence, Kansas
Eight blocks of downtown Lawrence that function as the main street of a university town — independent bookshops, record shops, restaurants, bars and two of the best small music rooms in the state, with almost no chain frontage. Quantrill's raiders burned this street in 1863 because it was the heart of free-state Kansas, and the rebuilt Victorian blocks are what stands there now. It appears on national best-main-street lists with some regularity, and locals just call it Mass Street.
