Matanuska Glacier

Valley Glacier On The Glenn Highway National Scenic Byway · Sutton, Alaska

A valley glacier about 27 miles long and 4 miles wide at its end, flowing from the Chugach Mountains to the Glenn Highway about two hours north-east of Anchorage, and billed as the largest glacier in the United States reachable by car. The Glenn Highway, a National Scenic Byway, passes viewpoints high above it, and the Matanuska Glacier State Recreation Site offers a campground and short nature trail with views. To stand on the ice, visitors pass through Glacier Park, a private access area at Mile 102, and walk onto the glacier with guides in helmets and crampons among crevasses, pools and blue ice formations. In 2026 self-guided access onto the ice was no longer permitted. Guided hikes started around $115 per person, the private gate fee was about $55 for adults, and full-day tours from Anchorage started around $329. Guided winter trips visit blue ice caves when conditions allow.
