Materuni Waterfall
A Waterfall On The Lower Slopes Of Kilimanjaro, Visited On A Half Day Cultural Tour From Moshi That Includes A Hike Through Chagga Banana And Coffee Farms, A Coffee Roasting Demonstration And A Swim In The Pool. A Popular Rest Day Trip For Kilimanjaro Climbers. · Moshi, Kilimanjaro
Materuni is a Chagga village on the southern slope of Kilimanjaro, about 15 km north of Moshi, roughly an hour away by road. A cultural half-day walks you down a steep path through banana, avocado, cassava and coffee farms to a waterfall of about 80 m, with a cold pool at its foot where visitors swim. Afterwards a local family shows the coffee: you pick, hull, roast with a mortar and pestle, brew over a fire and drink it with honey or sugar. Lunch is often banana stew, ndizi nyama, and sometimes mbege, a fermented banana drink, is offered. The honest picture: it is a pleasant half-day, popular as a rest day for Kilimanjaro climbers and for families, not a wonder worth a long trip. The path is steep and slippery, the swimming is cold at about 15 C, and you cannot visit without a local guide. It is not accessible for people who cannot manage steep muddy steps. Book through a Moshi operator a day ahead, and pack a towel, cash and shoes with grip. The farm families earn directly from the coffee tour and lunch.
